What
an exciting new series this proved to be. From Inner Mongolia
to the High Peak in Staffordshire, we followed the people whose
lives are inextricably linked to the railway. Trainspotters, travellers,
guards, drivers and those who live in renovated stations –
they all came under the spotlight.
The series includes vintage steam locos and Richard Branson’s
125 mph Pendolinos. Weeven travel overland through Siberia to
locate Stalin’s ‘Lost Railway’ which was built
on 100 miles of permafrost and never used.
We
also accompanied a packet of smoked salmon on its unique weekly
journey from the smokehouse to the restaurant via the picturesque
Heart of Wales line, where trains have to be flagged down.
Later
we followed Bob’s family and friends to Poland, where they
celebrate his 65th birthday by learning to drive steam engines
on the only commercial line still operating in Europe.
