We join the steam fanatics travelling to Poland – the only
place in the world where you can take your place on the footplate
and drive a live, working steam train running on the mainline. Great
shots of steam trains in action, as they power between the towns
of Wolsztyn and Poznan, and we meet the British brains behind the
operation.

From Shrewsbury to Swansea lies the ‘Heart of Wales line’

The JingPeng Line in China has become a mecca for steam train lovers
around the world. But ‘progress’ means that steam is
being phased, and diesel trains now dominate. We joined the last
steam trip along the line, and the programme features fantastic
winter shots of the final days of working steam in this most dramatic
of landscapes.

Food on the railways has not always been the most appetising of
combinations. We took a peek behind the scenes at the workings of
a railway kitchen on the East Coast Mainline, determined to shake
off the image of the BR sandwich. Kippers, rare steaks and silver
service is now the order of the day. A different era is evoked by
a trip to the Vale of Evesham where asparagus used to be grown and
sent by rail direct to the Houses of Parliament. |

What better way for steam train buffs to celebrate their wedding
– have the reception on board of course! We join a wedding
party aboard the ‘Duke of Gloucester’, as it hauls the
carriages northwards to Stratford Upon Avon. We also meet the unsung
hero’s of the railway – the crossing keepers who man
the rural outposts of the network. |

Steam has never been more evocative then when featured in the classic
film ‘Brief Encounter.’ Filmed in 1945, we join the 60th
Anniversary steam tour hauled by ‘Leander’ as lovers of
the film travel from Carnforth station in Lancashire – the films
location – along the spectacular Cumbrian Coast. We also meet
the ‘re-enactors’ following in the footsteps of Celia
Johnson and Trevor Howard. |

In 2004 the last ever Travelling Post Office – a TPO –
was shunted into the sidings. The days of men sorting the mail as
their train whistled through the night were over. We join a group
of enthusiasts keeping those days alive, by reliving the ‘catch
and drop’, as the cradle was placed out for onrushing steam
trains to grab the mail as they sped by. |
